Léonard Frey-Maibach

Léonard Frey-Maibach was born in Lyon (France), and started to play cello at the age of 8 years old. He studied at the "Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris" with Roland Pidoux, and at "Leopold Mozart Zentrum de Augsburg" alongside Professor Julius Berger. In 2009 he received the Third Prize of the Flame International Competition in Paris.

He started an international his career in 2014 when he is promoted Co-principal cellist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, and in 2015 Principal cellist under the direction of Ricardo Chailly. Léonard is a regular guest at the DSO Berlin, Staatskapelle Dresden, Deutsche Oper Berlin, OSR Genève and many more. From 2014 until 2018 he is the cellist of the famous Gewandhaus-Quartett, and performed at some major international music festival such as - "Hyogo Performing Arts Center" (Osaka), "Tokyo Opera City Concert Hal"l, "Shanghai Grand Theatre" - In Europe at - The "Mendelssohn Saal" (Leipzig), Usedom Festival - in South America at "Teatro Municipal de Santiago" in Chile.Léonard is as well teacher at the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and the Mendelssohn Orchestra Academy.

In October 2019 Léonard won the position of 1st solo-cellist at the OSR- Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Léonard plays a cello by Nicolas Lupot from 1810 and a modern bow by Bergeron .

In 2016 Léonard created with Juliette Rahon the interdisciplinary Ensemble Juliette Rahon & Co, with whom is he the co-artistic director. He part of the creations "Nomade" in 2016, "When a cello meets a Dancer" in 2017, "Les Nomades" in 2018, "1001 Leben" in 2019, "When a cello meets a Dancer" part 2. in 2019, "La dernière Sarabande - ou l'obsolescence programmée" for the season 2020.
